Derek Larson’s ongoing animated documentary series, Très Mall (2018-present) is a political cartoon following four friends living in an abandoned mall featuring writers and thinkers on topics like capitalism, philosophy, and violence.
Larson’s exhibition at ICA Chattanooga features all episodes on view concurrently for the first time, including a sculptural environment built from the animations. Read about the many contributors to Très Mall here.
About the artist:
Derek G. Larson (American, b. 1978) is an artist and animator who previously worked as an editor at PBS. His series, Très Mall, is an animated documentary featuring discussions on art and philosophy with recent guests Noam Chomsky, David Joselit, Carla Gannis, McKenzie Wark, and Priyamvada Gopal. Très Mall has been screened at venues including the Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen, Tranen, Times Square in New York City, MoCA Atlanta, and the Yale School of Architecture. Larson holds an MFA from the Yale School of Art. Larson writes, directs, and animates all episodes of Très Mall.
